A Program Built For Men
Men do better when they aren't doing it alone. At our Costa Mesa flagship, you join a team of men working toward the same thing: a stronger, healthier life without drugs and alcohol.
How It Works
Addiction isn't a character flaw, and you're not weak. The same relentless drive that made it impossible to stop becomes your greatest advantage once it's pointed in the right direction. We don't pile on restrictions. We teach you to harness it and get more out of life.
Structured training, ocean work, ice baths and sauna are the treatment itself, with clinical reasoning behind every session. Exercise restores the brain chemistry addiction ran down, and it scales to wherever you're starting, even if that's zero.
Daily addiction education and more one-on-one clinical time than the outpatient norm teach you what's actually happening in your brain, so cravings, anxiety and relapse patterns stop being mysteries and become problems you know how to solve.
You do all of it inside a small team of men who train, eat, and do the hard work together. Isolation is what drives relapse, so connection isn't left to chance here. It's built into the treatment day, and it's why graduates stay in each other's lives.
We built the program around what your life looks like after you leave, and we measure it:
Based on self-reported surveys of Tree House Recovery graduates. Every recovery is different and individual results vary.
The first question most guys ask
Reaching out is the hardest part. We're here to make it easier. The program is physical because action works, but nobody here expects you to show up fit. Men arrive at every fitness level, and plenty haven't trained in years. Come as you are, and we'll help you get stronger from wherever you're starting today.

Built By Men Who Live It
Tree House Recovery was founded by Justin McMillen, who rebuilt his own life from addiction and then built the program he wished had existed: one that treats men as capable of change, not broken beyond repair.
The physical backbone of the program, Action-Based Induction Therapy (ABIT), was co-created by Neil Trusso, our Physical Director, who served as a U.S. Navy SEAL from 1989 to 1997. Neil and his team scale every session to the man in front of them, whether you've trained for years or haven't broken a sweat since high school.
This is not a boot camp. There's no yelling and no shame. It's structured, active, and honest, run by men who have done this work themselves and train right alongside you.

Abstinence is just the jumping-off point. To make change last, you have to build a life you're excited to lead, so each man's program draws from eight integrated, evidence-based modalities that rebuild the whole person.
Private, focused sessions with licensed clinicians, built around your history, your goals, and your pace.
Daily, structured training that rebuilds the brain chemistry addiction wears down and restores real discipline. It scales to any starting point, even if you haven't trained in years.
Beach, boat, and surf work tied to brain science and team dynamic, co-created by a Navy SEAL. A differentiator no traditional center can match.
Learn exactly what addiction does to your brain and body, so cravings, triggers, and relapse patterns stop being mysteries and start being problems you can solve.
Honest, guided conversation inside a small circle of men who get it, where you practice being open and accountable instead of going it alone.
Process trauma and rewrite the story you tell yourself, turning painful history into a foundation for change.
Practical tools to calm the nervous system, sit with discomfort, and quiet the cravings and anxiety that used to send you back to using.
You practice new skills in real situations before you leave, so recovery holds up in everyday life, not just inside the treatment room.
In Their Own Words

Why Tree House
No powerlessness, no higher-power requirement. You build the skills and self-knowledge to stay sober on your own terms.
You recover inside a tight-knit team of men who hold each other accountable long after graduation.
Training rewires the brain's reward system and rebuilds confidence, and it scales to any fitness level, including none at all.
Founded by someone who walked this path himself, our team gets it because they've lived it.
Small groups and one-on-one counseling mean a plan built around your strengths, never one-size-fits-all.
Structured aftercare and an active alumni brotherhood keep you connected to the tools, and the people, that work.

New to treatment? Here's the difference in plain terms. PHP (Partial Hospitalization) is full-time structure, your whole day is treatment. IOP (Intensive Outpatient) is part-time, a few focused sessions a week so you can keep working or studying. Most people start in one and step down to the next, and an admissions specialist helps you choose.

Questions, Answered
No. Nobody walks in at their best, and nobody is judging your fitness level on day one. The training scales to wherever you're starting, even if you haven't exercised in years. We don't expect you to be in shape. We expect you to want to get healthier, and we'll help you do that at your own pace.
No. Training is one part of an 8-element curriculum that also includes one-on-one counseling with licensed clinicians, writing therapy, addiction education, yoga and meditation, and small process groups. The physical work supports the clinical work. It never replaces it.
No. Tree House is non-12-step. Instead of powerlessness, we focus on building skills, self-knowledge, and a team of people who hold you accountable. Many of our clients tried 12-step programs before and wanted a different way. If 12-step works for you, great. If it hasn't, this is another path.
No. There's no yelling, no punishment, and no shame. The program is structured and active because that's what works, and it's warm and judgment-free because that's what lasts. We meet you where you are.
Most major PPO plans are accepted, and we'll verify your exact benefits in minutes. Please note we're unable to accept Medicaid.
Often within days. The first step is a quick, confidential call. We'll talk through your situation, verify insurance, and help you take the next step as fast as you're ready.
Completely. Your conversation and information are private and HIPAA-secure. There's no obligation and no pressure, just honest answers about your options.
